The plant takes its name from the Latin 'spinosa', which refers to the spiky seed of the landrace varieties. Astonishing when you think of the small round and smooth leaves of the current varieties.
An annual plant native to Caucasia or Asia Minor, spinach became popular in France only relatively recently. It is said that spinach is extremely rich in iron. The reality is more moderate, but it is a good source of fibre and vitamins.
